Conceived by brothers Benjamin and Mason Rosenthal and co-created with dance and multimedia artist Alexander J. Romania as part of their ongoing “Self-Portrait” collaboration (since 2014), “Tent (Skin)” is an interdisciplinary performance in, and around, a 120 square foot tent.
In “Tent (Skin),” audiences sit outside of, and on occasion enter, a tent to participate in a pseudo-psychodrama about mental health.
Through personal storytelling, weightlifting, and chewing on beeswax, Benjamin performs a version of himself for the audience. Romania, in his role as Benjamin’s psychopomp “The Stuff,” dances in glowing green latex masks cast from his own family members' faces. Spending a majority of the time hiding inside the tent, Mason serves as translator and advocate for the audience through the use of live voiceover, projection, and shadow play.
