In the meantime, here's some photos from the event from John Muse.
The Fluxus Brothers (and their DaDa) had a great showing at Studio 34 as part of Fire Museum Presents. Ben, Morgan, and I are thinking about what might come next with this performance art lecture demonstration. A possible Philadelphia Fringe run? We'll see ... In the meantime, here's some photos from the event from John Muse. Together with longtime collaborator Morgan FitzPatrick Andrews, and longer-time collaborator (my brother) Benjamin Rosenthal, I've formed the Fluxus Brothers and DaDa Morgan. Each week the three of us rehearse pre-existing Fluxus art scores, and create our own Fluxus-inspired works. This practice has also included daily performances of "Stack" (an original score).
If you're interested in what we've been up to, stop by Studio 34 for the "Fun-A-Day" gallery opening on February 9th, and again for "Random Acts" on the 16th. Our Fluxus work will culminate in a longer piece as part of Fire Museum Presents on March 1st. Here's an article on a workshop I lead for a new Lightning Rod Special project at Haverford College.
"Throughout the workshop, Sheppard and his colleagues co-artistic director Alice Yorke and associate artistic director Mason Rosenthal, introduced students to the company’s methodology of performance as research. Known more broadly as devised theater, it’s a collaborative process of creating a performance with no existing script, using theater games and opportunities for improvisation to reveal stories and uncover characters. In one instance, the participants spent much of the day envisioning their bodies and personalities as varying percentages of cotton candy and other common amusement park objects. Their explorations were also supported by the in-person research they conducted among the soaring rollercoasters of central New Jersey’s thrilling park, Six Flags Great Adventure." I'm looking forward to teaching my first class at University of the Arts' Ira Brind School of Theater Arts in the new year! I'll be teaching a script analysis class for undergraduate theater majors across all of UArts' programs: Acting; Directing, Playwriting and Production; Musical Theater; and Theater Design and Technology.
I'm very excited to be leading a new Lightning Rod Special project on "American myth making!" This piece is slated for a premiere to coincide with the semiquincentennial of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
Last week, in collaboration with Haverford College, I led a handful of students alongside an ensemble of professional devised theater makers in performance research exploring the topic of American amusement parks. Learn more about the workshop here. This month is packed with Philadelphia Fringe Festival shows. Reach out if you'd like to join me to see a thing or two.
Friend and collaborator John Muse is also in residency at the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery at Haverford College. On the 21st from 4-6:30pm he'll be screening his film, including our piece Duet, and I'll be there to take part in a panel discussion. Click here for more information. I've made the move back to Philadelphia and have found a beautiful spot with my fiancée in West Philly! We're here setting up for another week, then it is off to Chicago for our wedding, before returning to our Philadelphia home at the end of the month. Stay tuned for more updates on my creative work once I'm back in action in the fall.
These past two weeks I've been part of a cohort of artists and scholars working with devised theatre in higher education. This institute has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and is hosted by Pig Iron Theatre Company in Philadelphia.
I've been here working and thinking and simultaneously searching for housing for my move back to Philly in August. This is Not a Scam opened this evening at the Blacksburg Public Library. Virginia Tech has an article about the piece and the process we used to create it available here.
